Building meaningful and positive relationships at work has a massive impact on your wellbeing. Human beings are naturally social creatures – we crave friendships and connection with others as much as we crave other basics such as food and water. Work can provide us with a sense of community and belonging, as well as social interaction. We spend such a large part of our lives at work that it makes sense that getting on with our colleagues makes work a better place to be. It also increases job satisfaction, productivity and without sounding dramatic – the quality of our life. It is also important for teamwork. So how do we go about build these meaningful and positive relationships?

1) Take responsibility to develop your people skills by identifying any areas you can work on – for example could you improve your communication skills or how you deal with conflict or change. Being self-aware can help you to create good people skills.
2) Be positive. Positivity is contagious and will help you to strengthen your relationships with colleagues. No-one wants to be around someone who is negative all the time, it has a very draining effect on energy levels.
3) Don’t be tempted to gossip! Soooooo tempting but responsible for creating so many tensions and negative relationships at work. Gossiping causes animosity and mistrust.
4) Appreciate and welcome diversity. We are all individuals and having different perspectives and insights is a massive positive when tackling a problem or in a creative environment. It also makes for an inclusive and happier place to work.
5) Practice active listening when you are talking to your colleagues. People respond and bond more with those who truly listen and hear what they have to say.
6) Set and manage boundaries so that work relationships don’t impact on your workload, relationships with others or life outside work.
7) Identify your own relationship needs. This sounds bizarre but actually understanding these needs can be instrumental in building relationships. Do you know what you need from others? And do you know what they need from you? Asking yourself these questions will raise your awareness and understanding.
